National Forests in Mississippi Travel Plan Meetings

January 30, 2007 7:00 AM

Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

Attention Mississippi recreationists!

As you know, the FS published a new rule requiring the agency to formally designate a system of roads, trails and areas where motorized vehicle use would be allowed. Forest Service regulation and other laws require the agency to conduct a planning process in collaboration with the public to help design the designated system.

National Forests in Mississippi are formulating a new travel plan that will limit ALL vehicle use to designated roads, trails and areas. The Forest Service (FS) will be hosting a series of public meetings on the Travel Management Rule planning process during the month of January and February.

The open houses will be held at a variety of locations around Mississippi (see schedule below). This will be the first step in the local planning process which will finalize with the production of a motor vehicle use map by May 2008.  All interested parties are encouraged to attend.

The meetings will be informal and held in an open house format. The meetings will give you the opportunity to discuss the new Travel Management Rule, ask questions, review maps of each district's current travel management system and suggest routes to be considered in the new travel system.
